Importance of Electronic Recycling Scrap and E-waste

Because of modern consumerism, people are continually upgrading their electronic devices every few years for better and faster models. But what happens to all the old devices? Are they generating more waste in landfills that isn’t biodegradable? Here are a few ways old electronics negatively affect the environment that prove the importance of recycling services that convert electronic recycling scrap and e-waste.

E-waste Contains Toxic Substances

Testing has shown that the materials used to make electronic devices can poison the soil in and around the landfill because there is often a lot of lead and mercury in them. Their components are literally toxic to the environment. Once thrown in a landfill, the toxic substances in electronic recycling scrap are being left to leach into the earth. When e-waste is exposed to heat, toxic chemicals are released into the air and damage the atmosphere. Those same toxic materials can also seep into the groundwater, harming both land and sea animals.

In addition, many pollutants from e-waste accumulate in the human body when people ingest contaminated air and water. A United Nations Environmental Programme study of 300 schoolchildren in Nairobi found that half the children had tested positive for respiratory problems, and 30 percent had blood abnormalities due to heavy-metal poisoning from electronic recycling scrap.
